A Thankfulness Challenge

Can You Give 10 Reasons to Be Grateful?

There’s a challenge tucked into the beginning of the May/June issue of In Touch Magazine. It’s not phrased as such, but every time I read Matt Woodley’s “Thanks for Taking My Stuff,” I can’t help but feel convicted. If he could find 10 reasons to be grateful that thieves broke into his house and walked off with his earthly possessions, surely I could find reasons to be thankful in my life’s challenges. After all, as Matt says, “the Bible doesn’t command [us] to be thankful for all circumstances, though it does say [we] must ‘give thanks in all circumstances’ (1 Thess. 5:18 NIV, emphasis added).”

So I thought about something in my life that was less than ideal—moving away from my family in Florida—and came up with a list of my own:

  1. It has allowed me to truly appreciate spring. The Sunshine State rarely gets cold, so I never knew how wonderful it is to be warm until I experienced winter.

  2. Being away from family has made me more reliant on God.

  3. I have met a slew of wonderful people I would never have crossed paths with otherwise.

  4. Moving to Georgia allowed me to take a job with In Touch Ministries, which has been the most rewarding experience of my life thus far.

  5. The long road trips home for visits are an excellent chance for my husband and me to spend quality time together.

  6. Because I see my loved ones less often than I would like, I am much more intentional with my time and attention when we are together.

  7. Two words—Antico Pizza.

  8. Living in Atlanta has given me the chance to attend a wide range of artistic events—the symphony, museum, and theater—which I enjoy (and might have missed out on otherwise).

  9. God used the move to grow my faith and soften my heart with regard to children. My husband and I will become adoptive parents this year.

  10. I’m much closer to my other family members in the Midwest, so I get the chance to see them more often than I did previously.

Just like that—10 things to be thankful for! How about you?
