It’s Time for Exploration

Make a New Discovery Today

Christopher Columbus set out to cross the Atlantic and found America. Lewis and Clark headed west. Neil Armstrong went to the moon and back. Now, Richard Branson plans to take us into the stratosphere on a rocket plane and Elon Musk wants to colonize Mars. Discovery lives in the human heart and, for many, has a voracious appetite.

Unfortunately, we often think adventure is a luxury we can’t afford. There’s work to do and people to care for—who has time for exploration? But you don’t have to be a billionaire to make new discoveries. There are many ways we can nurture our God-given spirit of exploration in our everyday lives. Here are just a few ways to do it:

You can visit a national treasure like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite with your family, or simply go for walk with a friend at a nearby park. God’s creation is full of untold wonders. You may be surprised at what you will find when you slow down and stop looking through the windows of your car, office, and home. Go outdoors from time to time and enjoy the natural world.

Get curious about your friends and family; ask them questions about their likes and dislikes. Or, strike up a conversation with the people at the table next to you at a restaurant. As they say—a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet!

The human race has been creating systems of thought since time began. Whether it’s a new technique for farming or a philosophical line of inquiry, people are always inventing new ways to do things and novel ways to think about them. Explore new ideas through books, documentaries, and podcasts. Get lost in a new world. Dream.

Even if you’ve read the Bible cover to cover, there’s always more to learn. Try studying God’s Word with an interlinear version to find out what a passage says in its original language. Read a book by a trusted theologian about a topic you’d like to know more about.

The One who set eternity in our hearts wants to give us an infinite life of exploration. Through Him and His Word, we discover truth, blessings, and revelation—about Him, ourselves, and the world. We will never be bored in the presence of God. Ask Him to open your eyes to His divine work—then praise Him for His omnipresent majesty.

The joy of exploration isn’t just for those living on the edge of human achievements. Every bit of this world speaks to the nature of our infinite, creative, and loving God, and the greatest discovery we could ever make is to realize He wants to spend eternity with us and accept His gift of salvation and everlasting life.
