Facing the Unfinished Task

As long as there are unbelievers, we face the unfinished task of leading them to Christ.

Originally preached on November 11, 2001

One of the most crucial things Jesus instructed believers was, "As the Father has sent Me, I also send you'" (John 20:21). Christ commissioned us to continue His work here on earth—to teach others about His atoning death and a new relationship with the Father. As long as there are unbelievers, we face the unfinished task of leading them to Christ.

Sermon Outline

Jesus gave His followers an important task in the Great Commission. Is it something you spend time carrying out? Today, Dr. Stanley explains the part we’re meant to play in this important calling.

Key Passage: John 20:19-22

Supporting Passages: Luke 10:25-28; Luke 24:49

Before Jesus returned to the Father, He gave His disciples an amazing task (John 20:19-22).

► “Our task requires far more than we have to give—that’s why God sent the Holy Spirit.”

The unfinished task belongs to …

  • The first disciples.

  • Every believer since Christ’s ascension.

  • The worldwide church, which is the body of Christ.

It is a divine task.

  • We are called to share the gospel of Christ—the One who came to reveal the Father, die an atoning death for us, and give us an abundant life.

It is a redemptive task.

  • When we participate, we become part of God’s redemptive plan for humankind.

It is a supernatural task.

  • We need the Spirit to help us (Luke 24:49).

It is a shared task.

  • Spreading the gospel should be done together and in dependence on the Holy Spirit.

► “This is a very important thing that God has called us to do.”

It is a divine responsibility.

  • We must accept this responsibility and continue our part until it is complete.

It is an awesome privilege.

  • By sharing what God reveals to us through sermons and study, we can join with Christ in helping to change people’s eternal destiny.

It is a commanded obligation.

  • The instruction Jesus gave was a command. It is something we as believers are required to accept.

► “The gospel message will absolutely transform people’s lives.”

There are four questions we must ask ourselves:

  1. What can I do?

  2. What should I do?

  3. What is God telling me to do?

  4. What am I willing to do?

The answers to these questions reveal our …

  • Love for Jesus.

  • Spirit-filled walk.

  • Servant spirit.

  • Focus in life.

  • Commitment to follow.

After Watching

  • One of the best ways to tell others about Jesus is to share a personal story of how He has helped you. How would you describe a difference the Lord has made in your life?

  • Today Dr. Stanley said, “There are no ‘Lone Rangers’ in the church.” We are meant to work together in sharing the gospel, depending on one another and the Holy Spirit. How does this change your understanding of what it means to witness to others?
