Sermon Outline

Do you know the different ways the Holy Spirit has been active in the world from the beginning of time until today? Have you experienced His presence in your life? This week, Dr. Stanley’s message addresses these questions and encourages us to walk fully in God’s Spirit.

Key Passage: John 7:37-39

Supporting Passages: Genesis 1:26; Exodus 31:1-5; Numbers 11:16-17; Judges 6:11-12; 1 Samuel 16:13; Isaiah 61:1-2; Luke 1:35; Luke 1:41; Luke 1:67; Luke 3:22; Acts 2:1-4; Acts 2:38-39; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13-14

The indwelling power of the Holy Spirit is essential if we want to accomplish the work God has called us to do. He is the source of “rivers of living water” that quench all thirst (John 7:37-39), a vital and powerful force in our life.

► “When the Holy Spirit gives a gift, it’s intended to fill a particular need and is given to a person who can fill that need.”

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit …

  • Was moving upon the deep at creation (Gen. 1:2).

  • Is part of the Godhead in whose image man was created (v. 26).

  • Came upon individuals for a specific task.

  • Inspired Bezalel with creativity for the tabernacle (Ex. 31:1-5).

  • Brought administrative assistance for Moses and the 70 elders (Num. 11:16-17).

  • Strengthened Gideon in warfare (Judg. 6:11-12).

  • Empowered David for leadership (1 Sam. 16:13).

  • Gave Isaiah the power of prophecy (Isa. 61:1-2).

► “Pentecost was the birthday of the church.”

The Holy Spirit was present in two major events in the New Testament:

1. Life of Christ

  • He, along with Mary, played a role in Jesus’ conception (Luke 1:35).

  • He filled Elizabeth and Zacharias, the parents of John the Baptist (vv. 41, 67).

  • He anointed Jesus at the River Jordan for His ministry (3:22).

2. Pentecost

  • He arrived in a new way to begin the church (Acts 2:1-4).

  • He came to abide permanently in Christ’s followers.

  • He commissioned believers as witnesses to the resurrection power of Christ.

► “The Holy Spirit in you speaks and works and moves, and He’s omnipotent.”

The Holy Spirit …

  • Is a gift received at salvation (vv. 38-39).

  • Is a pledge of our inheritance as God’s children (Eph. 1:13-14).

  • Marks us as God’s purchased possession (v. 14).

  • Is proof we belong to God (Rom. 8:9).

  • Works in us to effect miraculous change.

  • Regenerates us and convicts us of sin.

  • Bears witness in our spirit that we are children of God (v. 16).

  • Will guide, teach, and empower us to do all that God has planned for us.

After Watching

  • Does knowing that the Holy Spirit is your paraklētos—your Helper—in all things encourage you? How so?

  • Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit “flashing a warning in your life,” as Dr. Stanley described at the end of today’s sermon? If so, take a moment to praise Him for His loving care.
