Many times, when people yield to temptation, they respond by defending their actions and blaming others. If we want to behave in a godly manner, we have to learn the right way to deal with temptation. Dr. Stanley explains what temptation is, how it works, and ways we can deal with it.

Key Passage: 1 Corinthians 10:13
Supporting Passage: James 1:13
Temptation is a part of life, and it’s easy to find ourselves giving in time and again. What’s the believer’s answer to this problem?
► “You don’t have to grab onto, focus on, or fantasize about any thought that comes into your mind.”
Wisdom for the temptations of life:
Identify the most powerful temptation you face.
Accept that you have weaknesses, and be aware of them.
Know what Scripture says: Your temptations are common, but God will be faithful to set a limit on them; He will give you a way out (1 Cor. 10:13).
Make verse 13 part of your daily prayer for protection.
Temptation is …
An enticement to fulfill our natural, God-given desires in a way that goes beyond God-given bounds.
A pull to disobey God and have our own way.
Not from God but from Satan (James 1:13).
Common to everyone—and tailored to each person’s weakness.
A source of pleasure for the moment.
Substituted for the love of God and obedience.
Not a sin when it simply enters our mind.
Sinful when we decide to hold on to the thought.
An alarm warning us to stop and consider the cost.
► “The Holy Spirit is there to remind you that what you’re facing will have consequences.”
How can we defend against sin?
No matter what Satan throws at you, remember you don’t have to yield.
As soon as a tempting thought occurs, let it go.
Learn to think beyond the temptation to see the consequences.
Don’t get into an argument with the Devil.
► “You will not be able to defend yourself if you ignore the Word of God.”
How can we respond to temptation?
Take responsibility. We choose what we think or allow in our life.
Focus on the big picture.
Identify areas of weakness and remain vigilant.
Don’t let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. (Remember H.A.L.T.)
Visualize yourself doing the right thing.
Make yourself accountable to a godly friend.
Read the Word of God regularly.
Pray diligently.
After Watching
1 Corinthians 10:13 says that God will always provide us a way out of temptation. Has there ever been a time when you experienced this firsthand? What did you choose? Describe the result.
There’s power in slowing down and giving ourselves a moment. When you’re tempted, imagine hitting a pause button like the one on your remote control. Take a breath and say a brief prayer similar to this one based on Proverbs 15:24: “The path of life leads upward for the wise. Father, help me choose the best way forward. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
