If the Foundations Are Destroyed

Dr. Stanley uses the story of Saul persecuting David to illustrate how to find a sure path when it feels like your life is falling apart.

June 28, 2025

David cried out to God in his time of distress, and said, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3). It’s how we all feel when adversity comes to our lives. Dr. Stanley uses the story of Saul persecuting David to illustrate how to find a sure path when it feels like your life is falling apart.

Sermon Outline

God’s Word sustains more than just individuals. It also builds up and protects nations. Today, many countries are facing challenges, but as believers, we don’t need to cower in fear. Dr. Stanley’s message explores David’s courageous response to a struggling society.

Key Passage: Psalm 11:1-7

Supporting Passages: 1 Samuel 18:7; John 3:16; Hebrews 13:5; 1 John 1:9; 1 John 5:14-15

God’s Word is a stabilizer in our life. It encourages us and shows us the way through every situation.

►“David said, ‘I’m not running. No matter if the king of Israel is after me, I’m trusting the Lord to take care of me.’”

The Bible tells us …

  • God loves the world and sacrificed to save it (John 3:16).

  • God will forgive and cleanse believers of sin (1 John 1:9).

  • God hears and answers our prayers (5:14-15).

  • God is with us no matter what we are facing (Heb. 13:5).

► “God’s not inactive. God is available to listen to our pains and sorrows, hurts and heartaches.”

God cares about what happens in nations. He will protect the righteous:

  • To protect the nation of Israel, David slew Goliath, earning the jealousy of King Saul (1 Sam. 18:7).

  • Instead of running, David took refuge in God (Ps. 11:1-3).

If the foundations are destroyed, believers can choose to …

  • Stand on the Word of God. He tells us to open Scripture at any time to find guidance.

  • Turn to Almighty God (v. 4). He is still where He has always been.

  • Remember God is always available (vv. 4-6). He watches and sees everything that’s going on.

  • Trust in our relationship to God. Though He will destroy the wicked, we are secure in His love.

  • Be mindful that God hears and responds to our prayers (v. 7). When we remain upright and obedient, our relationship with Him is strong.

To stand against crumbling foundations, we must be among the righteous who pray effectively.

  • Revival is needed.

  • If we confess our sins and repent, God will cleanse us.

  • When we are cleansed from sin, our prayers are more powerful.

  • We must pray with others and seek God’s answer for our nation’s problems, not run from them.

► “Revival is not just getting a bunch of people saved. Revival is getting us clean before God so He’ll answer our prayers.”

After Watching

  • In Psalm 20:7, David tells Israel to “boast in the name of the Lord” rather than in “chariots” or “horses” (symbolic representations of human strength and power). What are some “chariots” you’ve relied on for support in the past? Pray and ask the Lord to help you learn how to take refuge in Him instead.

  • How has Dr. Stanley’s discussion of revival challenged you to pray for your nation and her people? Take a moment now to confess and repent before God—and to stand firm, knowing your intercession matters and will be heard.
